Why do we get pain?

PAIN IS PROTECTIVE!!

At its core, pain is designed to protect you from a situation your nervous system doesn't like. It is designed to make you take action, to change something that your system has decided is unhelpful or dangerous to you as a person.

Sometimes this is important. For example, if you break your ankle, pain is there to stop you doing further damage and to encourage you to seek help and optimise healing.

Sometimes pain is inappropriate. This happens when our pain system malfunctions.

For example, pain that has been there for a long time, after an injury has healed. This is known as chronic pain and may have many factors tied into it.

100% of the time, pain is modulated by biological, psychological and social factors. The combination of these things create the overall pain effect that you feel with all injuries or pain disorders. the extent to which each one is influencing your pain will change between contexts, and situations.

Regardless of the main driver for your pain, your pain is very real and giving you a message.

At Drovers Elite Physio, we have extra training in the Biopsychosocial model of health to enable you to get to the bottom of your pain, and live your best life as soon as possible.
